SPACE:
THE CHALLENGE
OR HOW TO MAKE YOUR SHOP AS "FLASHY" AS YOUR
ART
By Rob Hemmen, President and Owner, J&J Display
For most of us, organization is something we aspire to but
don't always attain. Every day
operations and the demands of running our own businesses can get in the way of
a commitment to organizing and maximizing space in our studios and shops, once
and for all. Luckily, there are some
tips and some products available today that can make our best intentions become
reality.
1) DON'T BE SQUARE - THINK CUBIC!
When your studio or shop's floor space seems to be
completely full with flash art samples and other merchandise, look up! There are a variety of wall-mounted racks on
the market today that can efficiently and attractively display your flash
art. There are also models which can
hold dimensional items such as body jewelry.
So get off the floor and utilize the wall space.
2) DIVIDE
& CONQUER
A good rule of thumb is to organize your art by subject
matter, price and/or complexity. The
ability to do so and to stay organized is easy with the variety of multi-panel
racks, either freestanding, countertop or wall-mounted that are so popular and
affordable. Archiving your art in this
way allows clients
to easily find what they are attracted to and enables you to easily
file new art that you've created.
3) CREATE A
Take some time to observe how customers behave and browse
in your shop. Is it too crowded or
cluttered for people to admire the art and products? Is some of your best flash art hidden from
sight? Can customers easily access
merchandise? Once you do this, make a
plan that meets the needs of your business and your customers. By creating a pleasing environment, you will
attract and satisfy more customers. And by concentrating on the aesthetics of
your studio or shop, you can increase your sales and decrease your stress.
